L.I.F.E. Argentina

Committee member Stephanie is volunteering at L.I.F.E. Argentina.  LIFE feeds poor kids in commodores (soup kitchens) in and around Buenos Aires.    With the support of Para Los Niños, they threw a party for the kids.

Here's Stephanie's account - "This past weekend I helped out with a Christmas party for 995 kids from the villas in and around BA. We started before 7AM loading a truck and a bus with gear, then set up in Parque Roca, fed them all lunch and snacks, gave each kid a gift, and had games, face painting, and entertainment. We finished cleaning and packing up about 9:30PM. I was responsible for mixing up 6 garbage cans (clean!) of juice and serving it on demand to the kids (bending to reach into the bottom of the bins repeatedly has left my back a bit sore – but I’m sure I’ll be 100% in a day or two).
With Milonga Para Los Niños donations I spent about 1800 pesos on gifts – purchased at a wholesale outlet – making the money go a lot further"

Christmas Appeal

Thank you to those very generuos people who donated to this special appeal.  The children have decided to go to the zoo, followed by dinner at McDonalds !!

If you would like to donate to this appeal, go to the MPLN web site and hit the Donate button. Please mark your donation with "Christmas Present"

Moving on

The purpose of the Honeros renovation is to provide a stable, safe environment where we can begin the real work. This includes the possibility of apprenticeships for boys and girls, English lessons, music and art. We look forward to any suggestions or support for the next phase of our venture.

 One Laptop per Child

Did you know: If 100 people represented the world's population, 1 (yes one) would own a computer.

One laptop per child is an amazing, highly organised program to bring computer literacy to the children of the world. We are working on implementing this plan in Moreno. It will be our most complex project by far involving the local community (schools), government (tax exemptions), possibly the education department and others.
We will be seeking the influence and support of government and major corporations in Argentina to make this happen.
If you know anyone in business, the IT and communications world, Trade or other areas that might be able to help, please ask them to contact us.

If you think it is too difficult, think about little Uruguay (Argentina's Tango neighbour) which has deployed 220,000 of these special laptops to children, plus school servers, software and other operational resources.
We wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

  Look ahead to 2010

Mark your diaries for 31 July 2010.  We have a fabulous new Brisbane venue booked and we have managed to secure Joaquin Amenabar to help us celebrate our 10th anniversary, following his successful tour of Australia and new Zealand and upcoming tours of the USA and Europe.

Amenabar's popular musicality workshops are well known around the world.  His excellent book and DVD are now available in Australia.  He leads a traditional Tango orchestra in Buenos Aires , Orchesta Tipica de la Guardia Vieja, and he has formed a quartet in Sydney to help promote live dance music in Australia.
