Without our partners in South America we would not be able to meet our objectives of delivering assistance direct to the children with certainty and an absolute minimum of costs. The first of these are our committee representatives in Buenos Aires who source the need and manage the distribution in Argentina, Hernan and Mercedes Domini. This young couple undertake this task competently, honestly and professionally, for no remuneration. They are kind and generous people who are much loved by everyone involved with Milonga Para Los Niños.Association Civil los Honeros Association Civil los Honeros is a foster home and day centre for children in Moreno. When we found los Honeros, the owner was catering for 80 children on a drop in basis, plus seven foster children. She was cooking outdoors because they has no stove and no gas. They had little bedding and other necessities. We provided a gas connection and gas for one year, a new bread oven and hot water. We also provided bedding for the children, window glass and cooking utensils and as a special surprise, gifts for Children's Day.
This year we plan to rebuild the foster home as the first stage of a plan to provide meaningful vocational education to the resident children and children from the surrounding area. We have provided farming equipment and building materials to the farm. In 2006 we provided assistance to renovate a drop-in recreation centre for local children. I had been a derelict club that was donated by the local government. It has become customary for us to support one-off opportunities as they arise. To date, these are:Brazil – December 2003. Through Rio Rhythmics Brazilian Dance Academy and the Tiatino-Climaco family, in 2003 provided bedding and other necessities for a home for mentally handicapped children and a large foster home in regional Brazil. MexicoIn January 2005 we helped Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. It is an orphanage located in the small village of Miacatlán, 27 miles southwest of Cuernavaca, and 77 miles south of Mexico City. There are almost 1000 orphans there. In 1999, a program was begun to help the families living at the garbage dump of Milpillas, 15 minutes from the home of Miacatlán. Currently, 115 girls and boys are picked up by bus every day and brought to Miacatlán where they receive food and a shower before joining the rest of the NPH children in school. As these children must help their families earn a living at the dump, they return at the end of each school day to Milpillas. One of our great supporters Stephanie Hanrahan spent a month helping teenagers at the orphanage develop self-worth and increase life satisfaction through games and the development of mental skills. Contributions from MPLN purchased books, sporting equipment, and socks for the children. Read this article in Athletic Insight about the program. In April/May 2007 Stephanie spent 4 weeks in Baja California running similar programs in two towns for teenagers living in poverty. Contact was made through the local Optimist Club. Contributions from MPLN provided backpacks, notebooks, and pens for 73 teenagers to attend school, as well as a number of books to begin a small library for them to share. One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)In 2006, the youth at Honeros told us that their biggest fear was the fear of being left behind with technology in the modern world. As part of our ongoing commitment to vocational education and helping children build a future, MPLN is making an appeal for specific donations of OLPC laptops for the youth at Honeros and Juvenil. Every $1,000 delivers 5 new laptop computers. If any company or individual wants to help keep the kids up with current technology.
